The following is a recent email that 1K Club member Richard Phillips sent to Ian Glover ...

Dear Ian,

I have a story and I hope that you find it interesting.

Recently, I was fortunate enough to meet Dave Scott. He was the commander of Apollo 15, the 7th man to walk on the Moon (one of 12) and the 1st man to drive on The Moon. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Scott

The event took place at The Metropole Hotel in Birmingham (England!) and consisted of a Drinks Reception and Dinner. To my very great pleasure, unexpectedly, I ended up sitting next to him at the Dinner.

Early on in the evening, at the Drinks Reception, I went over to Dave Scott and began talking to him, asking him about his space travels. After about 10 minutes I found myself 'pitching' him on Bloodhound SSC and he became very interested in the project. When we went through to the Dinner, to my very great and unexpected delight, I found myself sitting next to him and despite my best efforts to ask him questions about his space travels, he continued to quiz me about BLOODHOUND SSC. When I let slip that I had a copy of the Bloodhound Supporters Club Magazine in the boot of my car, together with some posters, he made me go and get them. He then sat at the table and read the Magazine and continued to talk about the project - please see the attached photos.

It was a surreal moment for me; I went there hoping to have an opportunity to ask the first man to drive on the Moon some questions about his exploits, when in fact it ended up with him asking me questions about the first man to drive a car faster than the speed of sound, a man who will soon be driving at over 1,000MPH!

I even think that he found the whole thing a bit 'tongue-in-cheek' - see the photo left!

At the end of the Dinner we shook hands, he thanked me for the information and stated that he would be in touch. So if you get a 'Dave Scott' from the USA joining the club (he has homes in California and Jacksonville), it will be him! I would very much like to know if he does in fact join, and I have asked Ian to let me know if he does so.

He also said that he would drop me an email about the project. If he does so and if he is interested in getting involved with the project in some way, I will contact you and take it from there.

I can see the press headlines now "First man to drive on the Moon meets and talks with first man to drive at the speed of sound!".

Regards,

      Richard Phillips.
