Vote for BLOODHOUND’s Chief Engineer

We’re very excited that BLOODHOUND’s Chief Engineer, Mark Chapman, has been nominated for inclusion in Semta's Engineering Hall of Fame! This celebrates the most inspiring and innovative British engineers, from the eighteenth century to the present day, and looks to the future of British engineering by recognising the amazing achievements of contemporary engineers. Please vote for Mark at http://www.semta.org.uk/hall-of-fame by Sunday 15 February. The winner will be announced on 24 February.

Latest car news

In the first few weeks of 2015 work on the car has continued to progress well. Highlights include:

  • All the parts for the HTP pump have arrived and it is now being assembled before heading to Newquay and then Norway for testing.
  • New components for the gearbox have been released from design to go out to manufacture.
  • The Ti floor and delta are both progressing very well.
  • The BLOODHOUND Build Team have trial fitted temporary plywood air brake doors to ensure the hinges align properly and allow them to start assembling the mechanism.

And it’s not just about building a car…. A purpose-built chassis stand and lifting beam have just arrived at the Technical Centre. These major supporting structures will let the team remove the upper chassis and lift the EJ200 into place – we couldn’t build the car without them.

NEW! Composite Club sponsorship

BLOODHOUND is launching a low-cost way for companies to show their support for the Project. For just £1,500+VAT a year you get a 25mm x 25mm square to put your logo on the car (or you can buy multiples of this space if you’d like a larger presence). The Composite Club logos will make up a mosaic on the side of both the full scale show cars, which are currently touring the world, and the real car when it does UK runway tests in August and then goes to in South Africa in September. Find out more at www.bloodhoundssc.com/club

We'd also like to thank Swagelok Bristol for upgrading from being an SME Sponsor to a Stripe Sponsor. This continues the company’s great support of BLOODHOUND. Thank you!

650mph Desert Comms Test

Radio communications with the BLOODHOUND car will be critical to the team's success in setting a 1,000mph (1,609km/h) world land speed record. Last autumn an L39 jet aircraft flew multiple passes down BLOODHOUND’s specially prepared South African desert track, synchronised with the new All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) Jaguar F-TYPE R Coupé driven by Project Director Richard Noble and a Jaguar XF saloon, at closing speeds of up to 650mph (1,046km/h). The cars carried the same equipment that will stream data, voice and imagery live from BLOODHOUND during test runs and record attempts in September this year and again in 2016. We filmed the high speed desert comms test: watch it here.

BLOODHOUND in Ecuador

While volunteering in Ecuador last year, Rolls-Royce BLOODHOUND Ambassador Simon Haydn-Smith had the opportunity to introduce the BLOODHOUND Project to residents of a small village in the rural north of the country – possibly the most far-flung Ambassador presentation to date! Simon reports that the kids really loved the videos, particularly the race with the Eurofighter – they never knew that cars like this existed, and are now keenly following the Project’s progress. Read Simon's report and other news from our Education Team here.

You don’t have to go as far as South America to help us inspire children when you are a BLOODHOUND ambassador. If you’d like to encourage children and young people to explore STEM subjects anywhere in the UK (or abroad!), then get in touch – it’s fun and extremely worthwhile.
