All systems go for Newquay!

Very soon, BLOODHOUND SSC and the Team will be heading to Newquay to prepare for the first runs of the Car. Amid the rising levels of excitement, there has been a massive amount of planning going on, plus the rather important job of getting the Car itself ready to drive, including:

  • A ‘flight worthy’ operational EJ200 jet engine has been delivered by Rolls-Royce – this is the one that will power the Car and it has now been installed into the Car (see photo above).
  • The Team has been fitting and calibrating sensors for the upper chassis and adding water and air cooling systems throughout the Car.
  • The brake disks and rear suspension have been added.
  • A lot of work has been done in and around the cockpit, such as fitting the power assisted steering, LP cock shut-off, smoke detectors, halon gas fire extinguisher, breathing air, throttle and brake pedals, 6-point harness, head protection, radio communications, wiring looms and control systems – all of which is tricky in such a confined space!

To find out more, watch the latest BLOODHOUND TV video in which our engineering manager, Frantz Nehammer, explains what’s been going on at the BLOODHOUND Technical Centre, and then follow our Twitter and Facebook channels.

Andy Green explains runway testing

As the Car gets closer to completion, driver Andy Green is getting excited about his new ‘office’ – the cockpit – but is also focussing closely on the tests that need to be done at Newquay in October.

In his latest online dairy, Andy explains how the Car that runs at Newquay will differ from the one that he will drive for the World Land Speed Record runs in South Africa, and what the tests are that the Team will carry out. If you’re joining us at Newquay, this is a great explanation of why the runway testing is important and what you’ll see us doing down there.

Support BLOODHOUND

The BLOODHOUND Project is funded by sponsorship and donations from individual members of the public, small and medium-sized businesses, and global corporations. Every last bit of money raised goes towards helping us create something special, with a lasting legacy of inspiration for our future generation of scientists and engineers.

One key way to support us is to buy BLOODHOUND merchandise from our online shop. We will have a limited edition Newquay branded Corgi model on sale very soon to commemorate the first runs of the Car in October. You can also buy a special edition Thrust SSC coin to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Andy Green setting the current World Land Speed Record in 1997.

You can support us in many other ways too:
