Today (21st Feb 2012), at Northampton College, Richard Noble, Bloodhound Project Director announced a month long education engagement programme with over 100 Northamptonshire schools and colleges. 15,000 students from across the county will be invited to attend special science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) lessons delivered by Bloodhound’s crack team of inspiring educationalists.

Kicking off in April, this will be the first county wide engagement programme of its kind. Its purpose, to enthuse the next generation to pursue careers in Science, Technology and Engineering, using the BLOODHOUND SuperSonic Car as inspiration.

BLOODHOUND SSC, is the ultimate jet and rocket powered racing car, designed to reach speeds over 1,000 mph and set a new World Land Speed Record when it runs on its desert race track across the Hakskeen Pan, Northern Cape, South Africa in 2013.

Northamptonshire County Council Leader, Jim Harker, said, “Educationally, the Bloodhound Project is a fantastic opportunity for schools and the County’s learners to broaden hands-on science and technology learning and challenge the curriculum. We’ve arranged for the Bloodhound team to work with our schools as a way of engaging students with science, technology and mathematics in a realistic context and so encourage them to consider studying a related course and pursuing a career in those fields.”

BLOODHOUND SSC Project Director, Richard Noble, said, “This event starts the first of its kind, a month long BLOODHOUND engagement programme reaching 15,000 children across Northamptonshire. Students will learn about the science, technology, engineering and mathematical challenges behind designing, building and racing a 1,000 mph car.”

Key product sponsors of the Bloodhound Project, Northamptonshire based Cosworth are a great example of high-tech manufacturing and engineering. Jonathan Parsons, HR Director for Cosworth Group, said, “The continuing success of the Cosworth Group in high performance engineering sectors such as aerospace, defence and automotive relies on a supply of world-beating engineers. We’re keen to see a healthy share of them being taught and trained in the UK through our schools and colleges. We firmly believe that inspirational projects like Bloodhound SSC can act as the spark to ignite an interest in STEM subjects helping to create the next generation of great British Engineers.”

The BLOODHOUND Education Programme continues to go from strength to strength with over 4,900 primary and secondary schools from across the UK signed up and using the BLOODHOUND education resources to bring a whole host of STEM lessons to life. The programme is also growing internationally
