Spectators head to the runway

Over 3,500 people watched BLOODHOUND SSC make its second set of public runs at Cornwall Airport Newquay today, reaching speeds of over 200mph. The enthusiastic crowd were treated to a repeat of Thursday’s exciting performance, with driver Andy Green making two runs down the runway, powered by the Rolls-Royce EJ200 jet engine.

“I’m delighted to be able to demonstrate the amazing performance of BLOODHOUND to a new set of spectators,” said Andy Green. “The Car is performing like a dream and I’m really enjoying driving it after the years of development. I hope it’s as exciting to watch as it is to drive!”

The BLOODHOUND Experience

People attending the event today viewed the Car being driven from alongside the runway, which was closed to air traffic during the period that the Car was running.

The Interactive Show Car inside the display area

Before and after the runs, visitors were able to see the Car close up and also enjoy a wide range of entertainment on the live stage, and in the interactive Education and Sponsors’ zones. They could also explore inside the BLOODHOUND Mission Control unit.

Among the exhibits were driving simulators and the brand new Speed Titans video game, developed by students at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol). In the multiplayer game, teams work together against the clock, searching for components to create their very own speed machines. Their designs are then put to the test on an airstrip, with scores given for accuracy, distance and top speed achieved.

Visitors could also build their own rocket-powered car and see it race down the specially-created run zone, and enjoy other hands-on activities.

Education Day

The BLOODHOUND Team will now prepare the Car and the event area for the last of the three BLOODHOUND events at Cornwall Airport Newquay – the Education Day on Monday 30 October, when around 3,500 children and young people are expected to attend for a specially designed inspirational event, which includes their very own chance to see the Car run.
