Rolex unveils bespoke instruments for BLOODHOUND

Rolex, the leading luxury watchmaking brand and BLOODHOUND's Official Timing Partner, has revealed the two bespoke instruments it exclusively developed and manufactured for BLOODHOUND's cockpit - an analogue speedometer and a chronograph. These combine world class technology with exacting standards of precision and reliability to create highly accurate, vital instruments. With their characteristic Rolex analogue dials, one will sit each side of Andy Green's hands on the left and right of the dashboard.

BLOODHOUND's first wheel arrives in Bristol

The first of the wheels for BLOODHOUND SSC arrived in Bristol recently and it's about to make history. This forged aluminium wheel will be used in the spin tests at Rolls-Royce in Derby to ensure that it - and all the other wheels - will behave as expected when spun at the high speeds (170 times per second) it will experience in the desert. If it performs as expected, this wheel will be part of the first set of four we use next summer.

Find out more about this wheel's unique journey on our website.

"Goat's head" (front suspension sub-assembly) put in place

The four huge machinings that fit together to form the core of the front suspension sub-assembly have been completed and trial fitted to the car. Known collectively at BLOODHOUND HQ as the "goat's head", due to the computer-generated image that appeared when this part of the car was being designed, the four parts together weigh just 68kg compared to an original weight of 924kg before they were machined!

Find out how the goat's head was designed and made in Conor's latest blog

Castrol joins the BLOODHOUND Project

Since our last newsletter, Castrol has joined the BLOODHOUND Project as a key partner, providing higher performance lubricants and brake and hydraulic fluids. The land speed record has been broken 21 times with Castrol as a partner, starting with Sir Malcolm Campbell's first record attempt in 1924.

Ifor Williams creates bespoke trailers for BLOODHOUND

Ifor Williams has sponsored four trailers, two of which have been custom made specifically for BLOODHOUND SSC's Turnaround Team. The two bespoke flatbed trailers have been created from existing designs which have been modified to give the Turnaround Team a higher payload, which is essential to cope with the weight of the equipment required for rocket refuelling at the return point of the Land Speed Record runs in South Africa. The two other trailers will be towed by a 4x4 car and will be the mobile workshops, containing essential ancillary equipment for the return runs.

Farnborough International Airshow opportunity

BLOODHOUND will have a pavilion at the Farnborough International Airshow - including the public weekend Farnborough Airshow - which runs from 14th to 20th July. This is a great opportunity for BLOODHOUND sponsors to showcase their brands at a key event for private and military sectors, with visits from ministers already provisionally scheduled. Meanwhile families and supporters can meet the companies that are helping to make BLOODHOUND SSC come to life - at an event where many of the planes on show will fly slower than BLOODHOUND's eventual 1,000mph speed on land!

Sponsor conferences

At our recent Sponsor Conference Castrol announced its purchase of a second full sized show car which will be going on tour, including trips to Europe. This will result in a huge amount of exposure for the BLOODHOUND Project and its partners. Our next sponsor conference will be in September 2014.

South African Trade Mission with opportunity to visit the Hakskeen Pan

BLOODHOUND sponsors have been invited to join a market visit to The Republic of South Africa from 9th-14th November 2014, led by UKTI South West in partnership with UKTI West Midlands. The visit will focus on the Advanced Engineering sector including automotive, aerospace and marine.

Existing and potential sponsors can find out more about all these opportunities by contacting Tony Parraman at tony.parraman@bloodhoundssc.com or Kim Watts at kim.watts@bloodhoundssc.com

Ambassadors in schools and clubs

In order to achieve its educational goal of encouraging the take up of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, the BLOODHOUND Project needs enthusiastic, willing volunteers to enthuse children and young people by telling them about BLOODHOUND SSC and firing their imagination!

Volunteers, called BLOODHOUND Ambassadors, are trained and given access to educational resources on BLOODHOUND BLAST, the Project's free online community, before being invited to engage with children in schools, after-school clubs, Science Fairs, Big Bang events and national events like the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Festival of Power at Santa Pod Raceway.

1K Club members are particularly requested to extend their support of the Project in this very practical, hands-on way!
If you are interested in supporting this vital aspect of the Project please contact Seema Quraishi by emailing her at seema.quraishi@bloodhoundssc.com and she can send you the details of how you can become part of the BLOODHOUND educational outreach programme.

An Ambassador's tale

BLOODHOUND Ambassadors not only play a vital role in fulfilling the Project's promise to promote STEM subjects but it's also a great chance to meet like-minded people! One of our Ambassadors, Ian Northeast, recently organised a meeting for Ambassadors in south-east England which proved to be an interesting and entertaining evening.

"Many thanks to all those that attended what turned into a very interesting and entertaining evening. Among the very informal discussions that were held, I was fortunate enough to overhear Colin being very inspirational in his discussions of his new role as a BLOODHOUND animator, a very exciting new direction that the BET has now taken, which I for one will certainly consider in future.

"Next up, Chris was very animated while talking about his experiences of organised track days in his beloved MG. Apparently experiencing the joys of chasing Porsche drivers round Silverstone is a must! Although it seems slightly off-topic, for some people it's their passion for this kind of thing that draws them to the BLOODHOUND Project - and, after all, we can't all get to drive BLOODHOUND!

"Many other subjects were covered, ranging from the relevant topics of pupil control and school communication techniques to classic cars, the joys and pains of parenthood and the benefits of retirement.

"Now I've started the ball rolling, I look forward to attending the next meeting!"

If you'd like a BLOODHOUND Ambassador to come into your school or club to talk about the car and engage children with hands-on Projects, please contact Dawn Fitt on dawn.fitt@bloodhoundssc.com

Education update

Did you know that the BLOODHOUND Education team offers a "Supersonic Show" for community groups as well as schools? Involving enquiry, discussion, design, construction, sound, shapes, aerodynamics and forces, the team can cater for up to 600 students in a day (3 x 1 hour shows for 200 students). Shows include:

  • "hands on" interactive activities

  • cross-curricular links and follow-up activities

  • build your own Vortex cannon

  • design and blast off your own air-powered rocket car.

Meanwhile, the BLOODHOUND Education team is continuing to deliver against its KS2/3 Department for Education (DfE) contract. Alongside this, we have developed a similar KS4/5 offer. By linking BLOODHOUND to the curriculum at Key Stages 2 to 5, students are shown how the extraordinary STEM and Computer Science that is evident throughout the BLOODHOUND Project links to their school subjects, future subject choices and career pathways.

Each of our workshops links to 6 weeks of curriculum-related activities and Project work. These resources enable teachers to maintain the engagement in STEM and Computer Science inspired by the BLOODHOUND education experience.

For more information, availability and costs of Supersonic Shows or KS2/3 or KS4/5 offers, please contact Kirsty Allpress at kirsty.allpress@bloodhoundssc.com or Dawn Fitt at dawn.fitt@bloodhoundssc.com (We are provisionally fully booked for KS2/3 events until March 2015, but you should still get in touch if you are interested.)

Education competitions

We will soon be in touch with schools on our mailing list to offer them the chance to get hold of one of 50 free entry tickets to the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Thursday 26th June. These tickets will be available on a first come first served basis, with each ticket enabling entry for one teacher and three pupils. The ticket also lets you enter the BLOODHOUND and GFOS Styrofoam Powered Rocket Car Challenge. So keep an eye out for your invitation! (Travel costs to the venue are not included.)

We have design and video competitions running on the website as well. More details are available at http://www.bloodhoundssc.com/education/competitions
