The Bloodhound Project Gerry Heather

Gerry Heather

STEM Advisor & Education Resources

I have been fascinated by all mechanical things since I was about eight, when my next door neighbour included me in car and motorcycle restoration projects. I soon started gathering a collection of old motorcycles and later F3 racing cars and saloons. I have continued this habit right up to the present day with a 1988 Lotus Excel being my latest project.

I have worked in education for most of my working life as a Technology and Engineering teacher in Bedfordshire and Luton. This has led to me working with many fascinating groups of students as part of the day to day curriculum and in after school clubs.

I ran a Young Engineers Club for many years with the aim of raising the awareness of the world of Engineering by taking part in many of the schemes we are promoting through Bloodhound. I was very proud to receive the award of Club Leader of the Year twice, the IEE prize and the Stephenson Award for Engineering Teaching. I retired from teaching five years ago and since then have been part of the EBP in Bedfordshire as an Advisor.

I am very enthusiastic about Bloodhound SSC as an education adventure and hope we can inspire some modern eight year olds!

BLOODHOUND breaks its first world record.

Today, 27th May 2011, at the Joseph Leckie Community Technology College in Walsall, students raced their miniature BLOODHOUND rocket car into the record books when it streaked across the playground at 88.89 mph. BLOODHOUND team member Gerry Heather was on hand to offer advice and scaled the speed up to the equivalent of a full size car reaching 259 mph! This is a prime example of how the BLOODHOUND Education Programme has been picked up by schools across the UK.
