"I learned that not all science is boring" - just one of the comments from over 250 girls brought together to get their hands dirty, their enthusiasm ignited and their eyes opened to the possibilities of a career in science.

On offer a chance to do everything from create a model of swine flu, collect a DNA sample and make it into a necklace, and build and race a model supersonic car. From robots to cider, code busting to a car run on waste, there was something from just about every sector of science.

BLOODHOUND educaton delivery drector, Dawn Fitt attended the National Final of the BLOODHOUND SSC Junior Engineer for Britain K’Nex Challenge , which took place at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford recently. Dawn was invited to judge the entries. Not an easy task due to the outstanding ideas of the primary pupils! The level of concentration and dedication to the task was amazing, so much so that a number of entries were whisked away after the event to provide additional ideas for Annie Berrisford and the BLOODHOUND engineering team.

This time of the year, there is a heavy demand on the BLOODHOUND Education Team to visit schools, so I was asked to help out on a particular busy day - I was asked to go along to the Warwickshire regional final of the Junior Engineer for Britain K'NEX Challenge in Rugby organised by Imagineering. "Don't worry" encouraged Dawn Fitt, "you will just be representing the BLOODHOUND team. Oh, and can you give a five minute talk about the project to the children". Two days before the event, this came over as a five to ten minute presentation.

The Junior Engineer for Britain K'NEX Challenge 2009 is based on the BLOODHOUNDSSC Land Speed Record Car. Schools around the UK with KS2 pupils (age 8 to 10) were invited to take part in the challenge. This challenge has been an ideal opportunity for primary age group students to take part in a national competition and have a visit from a STEM Ambassador to run the event in the school.
