Students design and race virtual land speed record cars

200 secondary school pupils will find out today [Wednesday 27 November] if their team has designed the fastest virtual land speed racer
For the past three months, 11 to 14-year-old pupils from 12 local schools have been taking part in SPEED: Beat the Bloodhound. The team-based competition, led by David Standingford and Jamil Appa from Zenotech Ltd, is part of a pilot education programme funded by a Royal Academy of Engineering Ingenious grant for public engagement.

South Africa's Helmet Design Competition winner
Monday, 15 July, 2013Dirk Coetzee, a 17-year old matriculant from Adamantia High School in Kimberley has won the South African leg of a competition that challenged young artists to design a helmet for Wing Commander Andy Green, who will be driving the BLOODHOUND supersonic car.

The competition attracted 1000 entries. There was a huge range of colours and designs, which were great fun to judge, but it was really difficult to make a final choice. I wish I had at least 5 helmets, as there were so many designs that I wanted to use.
